The Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson acquired this work by Reynier Leyva Novo, along with another one from the same series, from Havana’s Apartamento gallery at the International Contemporary Art Fair of Madrid (ARCO) in February 2017. It is part of Novo’s latest series, which harbours a clear interest in history viewed as a simulacrum of a questionable reality, and it also maintains a meticulous dedication to its visual solutions. The artist reconstructs a setting which compares a past image with the present via diptychs in which the smaller composition captures a historical time (featuring Fidel Castro) and the larger one recreates the landscape of its absence, a memory or recollection of that past time. The interplay of these geographic itineraries is a constant feature of this Cuban artist’s most recent works.
