Black and White Circle

TECHNICAL DATA

Author: Richard Long (Bristol, Reino Unido, 1955)
Títle: Black and White Circle
Year: 1988
Technique: marble and coal
Size: 600 cm (diameter)

This is one of Richard Long’s most important circular works, which he made in Aachen (Germany) in 1988. It is made up of two large circles, the inner one black, made up of irregular pieces of coal, and the outer one white, located 3 m away and surrounding the inner circle, this one made of white Carrara marble pieces. Both parts are equally dense and envisioned by Long as universal, timeless shapes. With this simplicity of media and shapes, Long manages to present a harmonious vision of nature which captures the tension between the chaos of the natural world and humans’ effort to contain the uncontrollable.

Black and White Circle was acquired by the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson at the auction at Christie’s in Amsterdam on 30 April and 1 May 2019 (lot 2019).
