This work is part of The Shadow Line series, whose title draws its reference from the novella of the same name written by Joseph Conrad in 1915. Just as in the text, which recounts a struggle associated with a life change in the transition from youth to adulthood, this painting is also dominated by tension and the struggle between colour and drawing, between chaos and order. Using the canvas as a backdrop—a frequent technique in this stage of the painter’s career—automatic abstraction invades the surface. A strong line dominates it, standing out over other more sinuous lines, blotches that seek to allude to Conrad’s boat and small dots and dabs with the paintbrush which aim to transfer to the canvas not only the struggle against the sea but also the painter’s own inner struggle.
This piece was acquired by the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson along with others by the same artist in the Juana de Aizpuru Gallery (Madrid) in January 2020.
