Ignacio Pinazo was a skilled painter of children. His models were often his own children, whose attitudes he captured with extraordinary naturalism. However, he also portrayed other children, as in this painting, in which Pinazo included another aspect that interested him: festivals and celebrations, in this case Palm Sunday. This is one of his most elaborate and important paintings showing children’s motifs because of its size. It shows the girl attired for the feast day, with the traditional plaited white palm and laurel branch in her left hand. Her hair is up in a plait held by a pink bow, she is wearing large gold earrings and her dress features Valencian lace with embroidered flowers, a fine, transparent shawl and pinafore. The figure, sketched with precision and treated with truthful naturalism by the painter, stands out over a dark background, much to Pinazo’s taste. Just as in many of his portraits of children, the girl is shown in profile, and her posture, with her head slightly downcast and her right hand resting on a bench, indicates that she is aware the importance of the offering on such a major feast day.
