This is one of the first pieces to be added to the Contemporary Art Collection, FMCMP, after the donation from four young Asturians as a result of the scholarship which, awarded by the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation and Gijón City Council, allowed them to participate in the Photo Miami fair in 2007, one of the world’s leading events in the field of photographic and video art. From Gijón, Irma Alvarez-Laviada has always focussed on geometric resources which in her paintings sometimes reach sculptural limits, and show her constant interest in the neoplastic area, architecture and the look of Mondrian, among other references.

In her photographic series she starts from similar architectural pretexts, looking to investigate forms, structures and compositions closely linked to her pictorial processes. The artist from Gijón here declares her admiration for the theoretical proposals of Imi Knoebel, Robert Mangold, Roland Fischer and Peter Halley, among others, incorporating the constructive sense in the game of spaces that she uses, in line with her work with other media. They are austere photographs, starting from realities that blur into compositions that are almost abstract, open, synthetic and fragmentary, like this one, where she maintains its compositional effectiveness, in terms of density, heat and colour, far from mannerisms. The visual planes combine like authentic fabrics, under that constructive tradition that also interests the artist from Gijón, configured on the basis of minimum units, with a delicate structural sobriety.
