This work on paper is a rara avis in Spanish collections. Coming from the artist’s family, it was acquired by the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson at the stand of the Galería Jorge Juan during the SAM (Modern Art Salon) fair in Madrid in 2020.
Just like many of the collages made by Alfonso Buñuel, it is likely based on a combination of different illustrations clipped from publications from the late 19th century, such as La Ilustración Ibérica, a scientific, literary and artistic weekly that began to be published in Barcelona in 1883 and is one of the publications he used the most. Perfectly composed, he seeks to make an impact via the contrast between the proportions of the figures and the space, as well as the visual shock of a tree-filled natural setting in which he places a headstone commemorating Mozart, with the combination of two strange male figures trapped in their bubbles, one of them with two fish, complemented by three other bubbles at the base of the headstone. The exploration of the absurd, the Romantic ambiance evoked by the landscape and the headstone, and his love of music, which is palpable in the allusion to the composer, are just some of the hallmarks of his output found in this piece.
