Gustave Doré, fascinated by Spain, where he traveled twice, is the author of the most widespread image of this country in France throughout the Second Empire. This painting was made after his second trip, which he made in 1862 in the company of Jean-Charles Davillier, and is based on one of his own drawings, which he would later publish in his book L’Espagne (1874). It depicts a young gypsy mother holding a tambourine in one hand while holding her child in her arms. It is a suggestive work for its realistic treatment of both the figures and their poor and harsh environment.
Acquired from Fernando Durán on October 28, 2020 (lot 402), its monumentality is enhanced by the large Second Empire frame, which was in poor condition and has recently been restored at the initiative of the Foundation.
