De los espejos XIV [Of Mirrors XIV] is part of a series of works done in wax – a technique that characterised Sicilia’s production for a time – of which there are two other pieces in the Masaveu Collection.
As Sicilia himself stated in a lecture, there is a possible connection between these pieces and the impact of a trip to Pakistan, during which the artist visited a rose garden that had suffered the consequences of the country’s political turmoil. In these works, such memories merge with a series of red stains seen in a Paris apartment, together with other images that are vaguely related to desire, intertwining the domestic and nature.
The depth and transparency of the wax, the chromatic mixture, the randomness, the polished surface and the colour of the background give this work and the whole series their peculiar character.
Exhibited at the Galería Soledad Lorenzo in Madrid in the year 2000 together with other pieces from the series, the painting was acquired by the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson at Ansorena Auctions on 18 June 2019 (lot 160).
