Luis de Morales was one of the most original and recognizable artists of the Spanish Renaissance and a key reference point in painting in Extremadura in the second half of the 16th century. Morales was considered to have his own particular style, a distinguishable “brand name” that appears in numerous inventories and is represented in many Spanish and international collections. Morales’s most important and characteristic works were widely known due to the existence of his own studio and to the repetitions of them by other painters and followers. Only El Greco can be considered a comparable phenomenon in Spain from approximately 1585 onwards in terms of the dissemination of his art and his commercial success.

This exhibition highlighted the artistic activity and personality of Luis de Morales almost a century after the Museo del Prado presented the first monographic exhibition on the artist. The Museum has 23 panels by the artist and his studio, making it the most important holding of Morales in terms of quantity and quality. The exhibition offered a unique opportunity to study some of the artist’s most important and best-known works, particularly his religious compositions.
