Depicted as a half-length figure in a relaxed pose, Antonio Ferrer del Río (Madrid, 1814–El Molar, Madrid, 1872) was a well-known historian, journalist and writer of the Spanish Romanticism movement. He wears the medal of the Real Academia Española, of which he was an academician, and the commander cross of the Order of Charles III.
Ferrer del Río maintained a close relationship with José de Madrazo, as indicated by one of the letters he sent him from the Archive of Simancas, nowadays held at the Museo del Prado and contained in the third volume of the Madrazo Collection of Letters, jointly published by the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson and the Museo del Prado. In fact, in the obituary Ferrer del Río wrote for the artist he mentions this portrait, one of the last that Madrazo painted, most likely in 1856, a few years before he passed away.
The painting was acquired at Fernando Durán, at the auction of 27 October 2022 (lot 537). It has recently been restored by the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson.
