MASAVEU COLLECTION:
OBJECT AND NATURE: STILL-LIFE AND FLOWER PAINTINGS OF THE 17TH AND 18TH CENTURIES IN VALENCIA

MUSEU DE BELLES ARTS VALÈNCIA
06 MARCH – 15 JUNE, 2025

The Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson and the Museu de Belles Arts València present the exhibition Masaveu Collection. Object and Nature: Still-Life and Flower Paintings of the 17th and 18th Centuries, featuring selected works from the Masaveu Collection. Curated by Ángel Aterido, lecturer in Art History at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and an expert on Spanish 17th-century painting, the exhibition will be on display at the  Museu de Belles Arts València from 6 March until 15 June 2025.

The exhibition, which has previously been hosted at the Fundación Unicaja in Seville,  the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias and the FMCMP Centre in Madrid, charts the development of still-life painting from the Baroque era to the Age of Enlightenment. Divided into four sections and comprising a selection of outstanding works, the show presents a representative overview of the origin and development of one of the most widespread genres in the western painting tradition.

Fifty works by some of the most celebrated still-life painters are featured in the exhibition, from the sober approaches of Juan van der Hamen, Alejandro de Loarte and Juan de Zurbarán, through the mature Baroque solutions of Juan de Arellano, to the sophisticated compositions of Luis Meléndez.
