Fourth lecture in the series on the exhibition The Collection of the Museu de Belles Arts, Valencia: Between Bosch and Sorolla at the FMCMP Madrid Centre.

The Museu de Belles Arts, Valencia was founded in response to the desire of the artists of the Academy to possess an institution that would be responsible for safeguarding art created under the auspices of academic canons between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Prompted by the need to protect what was beginning to be upheld as Valencian heritage, it gave rise to the first awareness of a unique identity.

Esther Alba Pagán, senior lecturer in the Art History Department at the Universitat de València, examines the art works connected with Valencian culture and the main national artists who explored it, such as Francisco de Goya.

BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS

Born in Valencia in 1974, she is a tenured professor at the University of Valencia’s Department of Art History. She holds a degree in Geography and History, specialising in Art History, and a PhD in Art History from the University of Valencia. Winner of an extraordinary award for her degree and doctorate from the University of Valencia and an Academic Recognition Award from the Regional Government of Valencia. She has formally completed four six-year research periods and four five-year teaching periods.

Her research activity focuses on the study and analysis of museology and museography and art criticism, with special attention to contemporary art and cultural heritage linked to the exchange and dissemination of ideas and knowledge, from the perspective of visual studies and the gender perspective. She has published books, book chapters and numerous articles in specialised journals and has also directed research projects focused on promoting the visibility of art made by women, being a member of a national inter-university team dedicated to rescuing the art produced by Spanish women artists between 1804 and 1939.

She has been vice-dean and dean of the Faculty of Geography and History. Since December 2021, she is the vice-rector of Culture and Society at the University of Valencia.

All lectures take place at 6.30 pm in the María Cristina Masaveu Auditorium.
