First lecture in the series on the exhibition The Collection of the Museu de Belles Arts, Valencia: Between Bosch and Sorolla at the FMCMP Madrid Centre.

Pablo González Tornel, director of the Museu de Belles Arts, Valencia and curator of the exhibition, charts the history of the Valencian art gallery from its origins in 1769 to the present day. He also analyses the magnificent art collection that the Museu de Belles Arts, Valencia, has amassed over the years to offer visitors a complete narrative of the history of art.

BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS

Pablo González Tornel (Valencia, 1977) has been the director of the Museu de Belles Arts, Valencia since September 2020. With a PhD in Art History, for which he obtained an outstanding thesis award, he teaches at the Universitat Jaume I in Castellón. He has been a fellow at several institutions, including the Università degli Studi di Palermo (Palermo), the Max-Planck-Institut für Kunstgeschichte-Biblioteca Hertziana (Rome), the Bogliasco Foundation (Genoa), and Villa I Tatti, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies (Florence).

He is the author of numerous books and articles on Spanish and Italian art of the Early Modern Era, including the monographs La Fiesta Barroca: los reinos de Nápoles y Sicilia (2014), Cuatro reyes para Sicilia. Proclamaciones y coronaciones en Palermo 1700-1735 (2016), Roma Hispánica. Cultura festiva española en la capital del Barroco (2017), and Ver es Creer. La Inmaculada Concepción y España en el siglo XVII (2021). The most recent exhibitions he has curated include Unblemished Mary: Politics and Religiosity in Baroque Spain (Valencia, 2017), Anima: Painting the Face and Soul (Valencia, 2022), Fiercely Human: Portraits of Baroque Holiness (Málaga, 2023), and The Collection of the Museu de Belles Arts, Valencia: Between Bosch and Sorolla (Madrid, 2024).

All lectures take place at 6.30 pm in the María Cristina Masaveu Auditorium.
