CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW ORGAN
THE CHURCH OF SAN PEDRO APOSTOL, POLA DE SIERO, ASTURIAS
The project to restore the organ of the Parish Church of San Pedro Apóstol in Pola de Siero, which has been in the town since 1902, entailed both human and economic efforts, which all came together to restore the active cultural and musical life which had taken place in Pola de Siero since the 19th Century, and which was put to an end at the beginning of the nineties when the instrument was destroyed as the result of a fatal collapse.
The new organ, which is made of oak and is formed by two main bodies, has been placed on the gospel side of the transept. The organ is medium-sized and has two manuals and a pedal, 19 stops along with couplers, making it possible to play a wide range of pieces with the maximum musical expressiveness.
The creation of this new instrument, signed by the renowned Organ Master Gerhard Grenzing, represents a unique and valuable artistic and musical legacy for Pola de Siero and also for Asturias. It will also boost new cultural possibilities that will revolve around the instrument: concerts, master classes and educational recitals by the conservatory’s students, collaboration with instrumental activities, etc.
In response to the sponsorship request submitted by the Pola de Siero Pro-Organ Association, and based on the importance and historical and cultural interest surrounding the incorporation of a new organ to the cultural and academic life in the town, the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation joined this valuable cultural initiative, along with other private, institutional and anonymous donations, which made it possible to finance the new instrument.
The new organ was unveiled in February 2013 with an Opening Concert led by Juan de la Rubia.
