LECTURE
THE GREAT BAROQUE CENTURY
IGNACIO CANO RIVERO

MARÍA CRISTINA MASAVEU AUDITORIUM
04 JUNE, 2024
6.30 PM

Fifth and final lecture in the series on the exhibition The Collection of the Museu de Belles Arts, Valencia: Between Bosch and Sorolla at the FMCMP Madrid Centre.

Spanish Baroque painting is an artistic manifestation characterised by immense creative activity and unprecedented freedom of expression.

The different schools, among which the one in Valencia had a unique personality, experienced a series of transformations prompted by a profound renewal of the vision of reality and humanity. This did not only have formal implications but gave rise to a new visual language. The new Baroque language was centred on certain common themes that each artist and school interpreted in their own way. The seventeenth century was the period that witnessed the gestation and manifestation of this new language.
