This work was part of the first solo exhibition by Juan Baraja in Madrid, with the series entitled Cathedrals, which took three years to complete and consists of ten photographs. It was acquired by the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation at the 2014 International Fair (ARCO, Madrid) and is inspired by the interior architecture of cement plants, contrasting formal and lighting elements.

Intersecting planes, almost metaphysical qualities, subtle colours with risky frames that attempt to capture the essence of the place are some of Juan Baraja’s compositional virtues. In this case, the author walks through the factory’s interior looking for places that somehow remind him of certain ideas inherited from Christian churches, such as Gothic verticality, which is implemented here using functional resources, lighting the walls for obvious reasons. Heavy machinery, thick layers of grey or white powder, in response to this keen exploration of the faithful to find the ethereal or superhuman between the building’s walls.
