THE RAPE OF LUCRECE

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE & NURIA ESPERT

Organised and Sponsored in Asturias by: The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation in collaboration with: The City Council of Oviedo.

Continuing with its work in the field of Sponsorship and dissemination of the Arts, the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation hopes to bring the highest possible number of people closer to one of the most difficult artistic and dramatic performances: a dramatic monologue based on a magnificent poem by Shakespeare , masterfully performed by one of our best leading ladies, Nuria Espert.

The aim of this project is to make what is maybe the least known work of the English playwright available to the people of Asturias, a work that has toured several different venues in Spain with both brilliance and success. With this aim in mind, and in order to enable accessibility, the ticket price has been almost entirely covered by the Foundation.

“The rape of Lucrece, William Shakespeare’s harrowing poem, contains the same essence and all the grandeur of his later works. The extraordinary and exhilarating account of the criminal event that put an end to the reign of the kings in Rome, giving rise to the establishment of the Roman Republic, was converted by Shakespeare into a mosaic of feeling, passion, rage and crime, in a spectacle of great beauty, despite its chilling violence”.
