NARANJERO DE ALGEZARES

TECHNICAL DATA

Author: Eduardo Rosales (Madrid, 1836-1873)
Title: Naranjero de Algezares
Year: 1872
Tecnique: oil on canvas
Size: 37,5 x 46,5 cm

Painted in Murcia six years after Aldeanas de las cercanías de Roma, also belonging to the Maria Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation Collection, the work focuses, like this one, on a peasant motif, in this case worked from life and with the characteristic realism of the painter’s last years.

It depicts an orange seller dressed in the typical clothing of his locality. Thus, Rosales painted him with the wide white canvas zaragüelles, held by the red sash, which also includes the lower part of the white shirt. Over it, the double-breasted vest, the short jacket and the blanket. The legs are protected by stockings above the ankle to the knee and the shoes are a pair of espadrilles. The character wears a red scarf and a black velvet montera. He appears in front of a whitewashed wall and accompanied by a donkey, two elements that are present in other compositions by Rosales from this period.

Included in the Register of Assets of Cultural Interest, it was acquired on June 17, 2021 in the Madrid house Alcalá (lot 1038).
