RESTORATION OF THE MAIN ALTARPIECE OF THE CHURCH OF SAN BARTOLOMÉ DE PARLERO

The initiative arose following a suggestion from Javier Navia-Osorio who, as the President of the Asturian Mountain Foundation, based in Villayón, addressed the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation to request its collaboration to restore the altarpiece of the church of San Bartolomé de Parlero. The valuable main altarpiece of the Parish Church of San Bartolomé de Parlero (Villayón Council) is an 18th century Baroque piece, in gold polychrome carved wood, which was removed due to its delicate state of conservation, awaiting resources to undertake its restoration.

Prior to the restoration of the valuable altarpiece, an initial analysis and evaluation phase was carried out regarding its delicate state of conservation, followed by a second study and assessment phase regarding possible specialist teams to work on the restoration, based on their professional merits. The final decision, which was taken by both the Asturian Mountain Foundation and the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation, selected the Restoration Workshop of Jesús Puras as the specialist restoration team to undertake the project.

The mutual collaboration between both institutions, with the prior authorisation and under the continuous supervision of the Dioceses Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church of the Archbishopric of Oviedo, ensured excellence in the intervention and restoration of the church’s main altarpiece.

The altarpiece was returned to the apse of the parish church after its restoration, in mid-2010.
