This head by Gargallo, of which the Succession Gargallo holds a copy in terracotta, reveals the sculptor’s ability to remain faithful to the tenets of classicism while simultaneously embracing the postulates of the international avant-garde. In this piece, Gargallo returns to the sculpture in the round and the robust mass of the classical tradition but combines them with a formal simplification more akin to the avant-garde.
