In his later years, Pablo Gargallo paid special attention to the mythological and biblical worlds, nevertheless remaining deeply attached to earthly themes. Urano is considered to be one of the key works from this period of his output. With an original edition of seven copies and three artist’s proofs, the sculpture is present in major collections such as those of the Museo Gargallo in Zaragoza, Barcelona City Council and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. It owes its significance to the fact that in Urano Gargallo effects a synthesis of cubism and classicism, which he always considered to be complementary rather than opposing approaches. Drawing on discoveries from his earlier investigations, he combines the sense of volume and mass of traditional sculpture with the formal experiments he had undertaken following his incursion into the use of the void in the context of cubism, although eschewing the emphasis on the plane as the basis for construction.
The Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson acquired this copy at Sotheby’s, London, on 20 July 2020 (lot 469).
